# I have the same words over and over again. -Katherine Paterson It's true that repetition is a key element of poetry, but not all repetition is easy to digest. Sometimes it can be repetitive for the sake of being repetitive, which ends up being more annoying than poetic. Worse still are poems that recycle cliches or use language without any life or energy behind it. These poems are hard to enjoy because they don't seem like they're coming from an authentic place - they feel like lines written by someone who doesn't know anything about the world around them. The following poem, "Favorite Things", is an example of this problem. The lines don't sound like something the author would say. They sound like something a middle-schooler would write, because she sounds young and naive, as if she hasn't yet learned the difference between fantasy and reality. I feel bad for her because I know it must be hard to live in a world that doesn't quite make sense to her, but at the same time I think it's sad that she hasn't developed much beyond her own innocence. If you're still reading this after taking a look at that last line alone, then you know you're dealing with someone who's not just inexperienced or naïve - they're just unable to express themselves well. The last line of the poem is really the icing on the cake. The author says, "It's that way with each one of my favorites things." I seriously doubt that it's possible to have a favorite thing for every single thing in this world. There are way too many things to count, and even if you were able to list your top five favorite things, you'd probably change your mind if I asked you again tomorrow. The only saving grace of this poem is the title. It's an interesting phrase, and it might make people curious enough to read the poem. But unfortunately, this poem doesn't live up to its title at all.
